WINERY NOTES:
The cuvee is made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes grown in vineyard parcels with varying types of soil: "Caillottes" and "Kimmeridgian Marls" (Marnes). Each terroir contributes complexity and finesse to this cuvee. The "caillottes" give the wine its floral and fruity notes, along with its lightness and freshness while the "terres blanches" (Kimmeridgian marls) provide structure, richness and power. It is its multiple origins that lend this cuvee its personality.
It shows fruity freshness and characteristic finesse on the palate that make it a wine that will age well for up to 5 years, though it is best enjoyed within the first three years. Up front the wine has pretty white fruit and floral aromatics which provide lift and freshness. Then, the richly textured minerality takes over and you begin to see the quiet power and structure which carries through to the fine and lengthy finish. This cuvee may be enjoyed on its own throughout the day or as an aperitif. It is the perfect complement to the bounty of the sea, including crustaceans, shellfish, and raw or cooked fish. It is also a fine match for white meats (poultry, veal) as well as cheese, in particular goat's cheeses and blue cheeses. It should be served at between 10 and 13C.
Winemaker Notes:
Incredibly appetizing and well balanced with finesse from limestone soils and length from the clay. Aromas of citrus and minerality lead to a brilliant refreshing finish. Serve with a first course risotto or a last course mature cheese platter.
Critical Acclaim:
90 points - Vinous
As the name suggests, this wine is a blend of parcels off both the Kimmeridgian marls and the limestone caillottes. Succulent and mouth-caressing, the 2019 Sancerre Marnes et Caillottes offers a mid-weight, rounded expression and restrained aromas of pure citrus, ripe elderflower and a touch of florality. It concludes with a chalky texture that has you licking the inside of your mouth (that'll be the limestone). There's the merest hint of alcohol on the finish, reminding us that this was a dry, sunny, ripe year.
